Spring Break & 2019 Senior Day

Flagstaff, AZ -

Spring Break - The Lumberjacks traveled from Northern Arizona to the Bay Area for their 2019 Spring Break. The trip was the first time in Northern California for many players, and a homecoming for Junior attacker Kyle Holleschau, and freshman defender Ben Rasmus.

NAU played three opponents in three days, with two ranking in the top 15 nationally. The Jacks gained momentum as the trip progressed, benefitting from the incredible hospitality of the Spinelli family. Following the first game against UC Davis, the Spinelli's hosted the team in beautiful Napa, CA for a fantastic meal and some R&R by the pool.

UC Santa Cruz was NAU's second opponent in Northern California, and the game proved to be highly exciting for fans who made the trip. The men were able to enjoy the Santa Cruz boardwalk and beach following the game. Sophomore Goalie Alec Gastony scored his first collegiate goal, and the footage made national lacrosse news as a "SportsCenter Top Play".

In the third Spring Break game in three days, the Lumberjacks faced Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA. The men enjoyed a few hours in San Fransisco before crossing over the Berkley Bridge. They barely got in this team picture before fog engulfed the iconic Golden Gate Bridge!

Senior Day- The Jacks (4-2 previous record) hosted #10 ranked Loyola Marymount University (6-1 previous record) on their 2019 Senior Day. With conference playoff implications on the line, Troy Spinelli, Jacob Belshin, and Hugo Casey lead their teammates into an unforgettable performance in their final home game.

Results: The Jacks won 14-5 against #10 LMU, and improved to a 5-2 record on the season. The win secured the #1 seed in the SLC North conference, and earned a first round playoff bye. NAU is currently ranked #12 nationally.

Top Performances vs LMU:

Alec Gastony - The Sophomore Goalie was locked in, and stood on his head for 60 minutes. Alec made 19 saves, some in highlight reel fashion. He beat two Attackers in 50/50 end-line races on shot backups, had a caused turnover, and quarterbacked the clearing game with accuracy, and athleticism.

Ty Silva - The Junior Midfielder dominated the face-off dot, winning 15 draws to 7 losses. Ty posted a 3 goals, 3 assists and 12 ground ball stat line. This is the definition of a do-it-all performance.

Hank Halfaker - The Sophomore LSM was a force in-between the lines, covering serious ground against LMU. Hank gobbled up 7 ground balls, and caused two turnovers during the game. Hank made consistent plays on the wing, man-down, and riding game that generated time of possession for NAU.

Looking Ahead: The Lumberjacks travel to Durango, CO to play Fort Lewis College, and MSU Denver this weekend. Look to twitter and Instagram for score updates! SLC playoffs are 4/27 in Encinitas, CA.

Thank You: To NAU parents, fans, and alumni for supporting the team at home, and away. NAU looks forward to, and relies upon your continued support for our playoff push. Special thank you to Dave Gates for taking incredible pictures, more to come!
